Deep Time

4.5 Billion Years in Motion

Working Concept Plan

The experience this room is designed to create

From the birth of Earth to the rise of life, Deep Time turns planetary history into an embodied sequence of heat, scale, sound, darkness, and emergence.

Give visitors a felt sense of time before human memory and establish the opening movement of the museum’s civilizational arc.

Planning statusThis page is a directional design brief, not a finalized curatorial, architectural, or construction commitment. It will evolve through scholarly, community, accessibility, conservation, and design review.
Experience Framework

How the plan unfolds

01

Visitor journey

  • Cross a compressed, dark threshold that resets everyday scale.
  • Encounter planetary formation, ancient oceans, extinctions, and renewal as a continuous spatial story.
  • Exit with the human story placed inside a much larger inheritance.
02

Spatial & atmospheric plan

  • Layer large-format imagery with geological material, atmospheric sound, and controlled shifts in temperature and light.
  • Use scale markers and quiet pause points so the magnitude remains understandable rather than merely spectacular.
  • Connect directly to Rooms 01–21 of the narrative spine.
03

Interpretive commitments

  • Distinguish established evidence, scientific inference, and artistic reconstruction.
  • Preserve all embedded labels and historical notation in the supplied visual references.
  • Provide captioning, tactile alternatives, low-sensory routes, and seated viewpoints from the start.
04

Next development priorities

  • Confirm the scientific advisory framework.
  • Map the first twenty-one rooms to a single visitor rhythm.
  • Prototype one projection environment and one tactile time-scale device.
  • Build the object, replica, and media requirements list.

Continue through the complete civilizational arc, or join the conversation shaping what these rooms become.
